Our Work
At Street Cats of Tavira there are many aspects of cat rescue in which we are involved. Our association is small but we have helped many people of Tavira with their "cat problems".

Whether a one-cat sterilisation or a medium size cat colony TNR, we endeavour to place the cats' needs at the forefront of what we do. Our focus is on quality, not quantity.

Feeding

At Street Cats of Tavira we personally feed four cat colonies daily and are part of volunteer groups feeding five more colonies.
We also believe that a strong immune system is vital for the health of the street cat. To improve the cats' immune system we add extra vitamins and pre/probiotics to the food we give.
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)

Like many other Municipals in Portugal, Tavira has many hundreds of cats each month that are in need of neutering.
Street Cats of Tavira will do medium size (10-20) and small TNRs at colonies or individual street cats.
For the medium size TNRs we work with the Municipal Canil with their weekly neutering programme for the smaller ones we will use our preferred vet.
Adoptions

All our adoptions are cats rescued from the streets. Every cat is health checked, fostered, socialised and adopted. We treat each cat as an individual and our rescue-to-adoption process is tailored to the needs of each cat.
It is vital to us to find the right owners for our cats so we have a meet and greet where we, the cat and the potential owners can determine if they are the right match for each other.
We do not have a shelter but a "home" setting for our cats.

Health Care

At Street Cats of Tavira we help with the healthcare of some of the sick cats found in colonies and on the streets. Working with the Municipal vet or with our preferred vet in Tavira we administer prescribed health care to help the cats while they remain on the street.
In some special cases we will take care of the cat in a place of safety until it is well enough to be released back to the streets.
The health of the cats in the colonies is high on our list of priorities. We believe the street cat is as deserving as a family pet to be protected from diseases. For that reason we have a vaccination programme for our colony cats.
Cat Rescue

Street Cats of Tavira are only two individuals but we respond to many calls for help where a cat is in a desperate state. If we cannot help then we will find someone in our network who can.
As part of our TNRs we also rescue kittens who are too young for sterilisations. These kittens are then made available for adoption.
We answer calls for sick cats, injured cats and expectant cats who are in need of a safe place to have their kittens and for their kittens to survive.
Where a cat cannot be seen by the Municipal vet then we will have the cat seen by our preferred vet in Tavira.
